Part One: Master And Apprentice
Hey Ahsoka fans!
Disney+ dropped two episodes of Ashoka this week and they were both exciting and chock-full of new characters, locations, and points! I’ll have a recap of the second episode later on, but first let’s focus on the premiere episode, titled Master And Apprentice.
Of the 43 League Characters in the Ahsoka Fantasy League this year, 14 scored points for their teams this week. I’ll include a recap of all the scoring below, but first let’s get right to the standings after Week 1.
WEEK 1 – PART ONE RESULTS
- GoForPapaPalpatine – 81
- nWo – 67.5
- Soup Ahsokas – 52
- Beggars Canyon Bullies – 47
Finishing in first place this week is GoForPapaPalpatine who had 7 characters scoring points this week, including Ahsoka Tano (odd), Sabine Wren, Shin Hati, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Huyang, Anakin Skywalker, and Kanan Jarrus.
In second place this week is nWo with 67.5 points, who also had all characters in groups 1-7 scoring points, including Ahsoka Tano (odd), Hera Syndulla, Baylan Skoll, Ezra Bridger, Morgan Elsbeth, Chopper, and Zeb Orrelios.
In third place this week is Soup Ahsokas with 52 points and a scoring lineup of 5 characters: Sabine Wren, Baylan Skoll, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Morgan Elsbeth, and Anakin Skywalker.
In fourth place this week is Beggars Canyon Bullies with 47 points and a scoring lineup of 4 characters: Sabine Wren, Shin Hati, Ezra Bridger, and Marrok.
Important Scoring Note
Fantasy League Geek made a scoring judgment call in this episode that will remain consistent throughout the season. According to the rules, appearing as an image or hologram counts for 1 appearance point, so a hologram or still image onscreen during a wipe transition will also score points. This occurred with the characters drawn on the Lothal monument in the first episode. However, a hologram or still image present in a scene does not count as a visit to a planet. Also, drawings or paintings of people, objects, or animals will not count for encounter points. For example, the painting of the loth-wolf on the monument in the first episode does not result in points scored for encountering a loth-wolf. Nor do the graffiti images of loth-cats or stormtroopers that Sabine draws on walls and armor count as an encounter with those. The precedent for this scoring decision was made in the Mandalorian Season 3 Fantasy League in which characters did not score points for encountering a mythosaur when appearing onscreen with a mythosaur skull forged from beskar.
Scoring Recap
The first points weren’t scored until more than 3 minutes and 30 seconds into the episode when Baylan Skoll exits the ramp of his ETA-class shuttle, barely ahead of his apprentice Shin Hati, and receives 5 points for appearing first onscreen. Both he and Shin score 1 point each for appearing in the episode, and seconds later, Baylan scores 5 first line points by speaking the phrase “Thank you for allowing us to come on board, Captain…”
Baylan and Shin both score 2 more points each for appearing onscreen with an X-Wing fighter in the hangar of the New Republic ship.
Shin ignites her lightsaber, scoring 0.5 points and quickly uses the Force three times to push the New Republic security officers, scoring 1.5 total points. Baylan also uses the Force to freeze Captain Hayle and spin him around, scoring 0.5 points. He scores 0.5 more points for igniting his lightsaber to kill the captain.
Shin scores 0.5 more points for igniting her lightsaber again on the bridge of the New Republic ship and 0.5 points for Force pushing an officer there.
Baylan scores 0.5 points for igniting his lightsaber again after he killed the captain in the hangar. He Force chokes a security guard for 0.5 more points.
Baylan again uses the Force to unlock Morgan Elsbeth’s prison cell, and uses it again to release her cuffs, scoring 0.5 points each time. Morgan Elsbeth scores 1 point for appearing in the episode, but is penalized -1.5 points for being captured and placed in cuffs. She calls Baylan by his name, and he also says hers, trading 0.5 points. Morgan also says Grand Admiral Thrawn’s and Ahsoka Tano’s name, giving both 0.5 points before either character appears.
In the next scene, Ahsoka Tano scores 1 point for appearing in the episode and 1 additional point for visiting a new planet, later revealed to be named Arcana. She scores 1 point for igniting both her lightsabers and 0.5 points for using the Force to assist with cutting a hole in the ground to enter the temple below.
She uses the Force to hear ghostly whispers that allow her to position the first column correctly to solve the puzzle and reveal the star map she seeks. It is unclear if she uses the Force again on the next two columns, so she is only awarded 0.5 points.
Ahsoka calls Huyang by name on her comm twice, giving him 1 point. She uses the Force to assist with a leap back out of the underground temple, where she encounters an ambush from several HK assassin droids. In the skirmish with the droids, she scores 1 point for igniting both lightsabers, and uses the Force three more times to cut holes beneath three of the droids, dropping them into the temple below. She scores 0.5 points for using the Force again to leap out herself. She calls Huyang’s name again on her comm, giving him another 0.5 points, then she scores 0.5 points for using the Force to assist her leap onto her ship’s ramp. Huyang scores 1 point for appearing in the episode and 1 point for visiting Arcana when he pilots the ship close to the surface to rescue Ashoka from the self-detonating assassin droids. Both Huyang’s and Morgan Elsbeth’s names are spoken in the cockpit of Ahsoka’s ship, giving 0.5 points to each before the scene ends with both Ahsoka and Huyang scoring 0.5 points each for appearing onscreen during a wipe transition.
Ahsoka and Huyang approach Home One in their T-6 ship, scoring 2 points each for encountering an X-Wing fighter. They don’t score additional points for encountering the X-wing in the hangar of the New Republic ship. Hera Syndulla scores 1 point for appearing in the episode, and another 0.5 points when Ahsoka calls her by name. Hera was never onscreen at the same time as the X-wing, so she does not score points for encountering it. However, all three characters were onscreen for the wipe transition that ends the scene and each scored 0.5 points.
Hera, Ahsoka, and Huyang all score 0.5 points for appearing onscreen for the back half of the transition to start the next scene in the council room. Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati also score 0.5 points each for appearing onscreen for the wipe transition and also score 2 points each for appearing as a hologram. Shin scores 0.5 points for igniting her lightsaber in the hologram recording of their earlier attack, but neither score points for any Force use because the hologram pauses before any more action is shown. During the scene, Grand Admiral Thrawn is name-dropped four times scoring 2 total points. Morgan Elsbeth is name-dropped three times scoring 1.5 points, and Ezra Bridger scores his first point of the season for being mentioned twice. Huyang also scores another 0.5 points for being mentioned by name and Hera scores 1 point for saying the name of the planet Lothal. Ahsoka scores 0.5 points for being onscreen during the wipe transition that ends the scene.
At the ceremony dedicating the monument on Lothal, Ezra Bridger is name-dropped by Governor Azadi twice, scoring 1 point. The governor also name-drops Sabine Wren four times, giving her 2 more points. The monument is a painting that contains images of Kanan Jarrus, Zeb Orrelios, Chopper, Ezra Bridger, and Sabine Wren, who all score 1 point for appearing in the episode. Those same characters (minus Chopper who was out of frame) and Hera Syndulla, score 0.5 points for appearing during the wipe transition that ends the scene.
In the next scene, the E-wing pilots sent by Governor Azadi to find Sabine Wren say her name five times, giving her 2.5 points. Sabine also scores 2 points for visiting Lothal. She does not score points for being onscreen for the wipe transition at the beginning or end of this scene, because she was just an indiscernible speck in the distance.
In the next scene, Sabine Wren scores 0.5 points for encountering a loth-cat at the old communications tower that she’s made her new home. Ezra receives 2 points for appearing as a hologram and Sabine scores 0.5 points when he greets her by name in the recording. Ezra also mentions Thrawn in the message, giving the Grand Admiral 0.5 points. Ezra also receives 1 point for saying the phrase ‘May The Force Be With You.’ Sabine holds a cup throughout the message from Ezra but never takes a drink so she does not score points for drinking a beverage. The scene ends with a wipe transition, giving both Sabine and Ezra 0.5 more points.
In the next scene, Shin Hati, Morgan Elsbeth, Baylan Skoll, and Marrok all receive 1 point for visiting Arcana. Marrok also scores 1 point for appearing in the episode. Morgan, Baylan and Shin all score 1 point for saying the name of the planet Lothal and Morgan scores an additional point for saying the name of the planet Dathomir. Baylan mentions Ahsoka Tano’s and Sabine Wren’s name, giving each 0.5 points. The scene ends with a wipe transition, giving Baylan, Shin, and Marrok 0.5 points each.
Sabine appears onscreen with a loth-cat in the next scene in her home, but doesn’t score additional points because she has not established a presence away from the cat. She does seem to be experiencing a Force dream, so she is awarded 0.5 points for using the Force. Sabine receives 2 points for encountering an X-Wing fighter when two fly overhead, escorting Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 ship. The scene ends with a wipe transition, giving Sabine 0.5 more points.
Huyang and Ahsoka are both onscreen for the last half of the same transition and score 0.5 points each, plus 2 points each for visiting the planet Lothal. Both Huyang and Governor Azadi call Sabine by name giving her 1 point, and Huyang scores 0.5 points when Sabine calls him by name. Ezra also scores 0.5 more points when Ahsoka says his name. Sabine scores 0.5 points for being onscreen during the wipe transition that ends the scene.
Ahsoka is onscreen for the back half of the wipe transition to the next scene on her ship and scores 0.5 points. Sabine name-drops Ezra to give the absent Jedi 0.5 more points and Ahsoka gives the absent Grand Admiral Thrawn 0.5 points by mentioning his name. Ahsoka scores 1 point each for mentioning the name of the planet Arcana and Dathomir. Ahsoka name-drops Huyang when activating the hologram of the temple on Arcana, giving him 0.5 points. Ahsoka lifts a cup to her mouth to drink. The shot cuts away quickly, but a following shot shows her lowering the cup from her mouth, so she is awarded 1 point for taking a drink. Huyang enters and he and Ahsoka exchange names and 0.5 points. Ahsoka also mentions Ezra’s name, giving him 0.5 points.
In the next scene, Ahsoka calls Huyang by name twice while he’s analyzing the hologram of Baylan’s and Shin’s lightsabers, giving him 1 point. Huyang mentions Baylan’s name, giving the former Jedi 0.5 points. Ahsoka calls Sabine’s name when she exits the room to tell her the identity of Baylan Skoll, giving her 0.5 more points. Both Huyang and Ashoka are onscreen for the wipe transition that ends the scene, scoring 0.5 points each.
Sabine Wren is onscreen for the second half of the wipe transition that begins the next scene, riding her swoop bike back to the old communications tower, after taking the star map from Ahsoka’s ship, and scores 0.5 points. A probe droid spots Sabine, and Shin Hati receives 2 points for visiting Lothal. Shin is onscreen for the wipe transition that ends the scene, scoring 0.5 points.
Sabine Wren scores 0.5 points for appearing onscreen with her pet loth-cat when she returns home with the star map. She scores 0.5 more points for the wipe transition that ends the scene.
Ahsoka and Huyang are onscreen for the back half of the transition that starts the next scene and score 0.5 points each. Hera Syndulla scores 2 points for appearing as a hologram onboard Ahsoka’s ship. Huyang, Hera and Ahsoka call Sabine by name, giving her 1.5 points. Ahsoka also mentions Anakin Skywalker’s name, giving him his first half-point of the season. Ahsoka scores 0.5 points for appearing onscreen for the wipe transition that ends the scene.
Sabine scores 0.5 points for appearing onscreen during the same wipe transition to start the next scene. She pours herself a drink and takes a sip while puzzling over the star map, scoring 1 point. After being attacked by assassin droids, Sabine calls for back up, saying Huyang’s name over her comm, giving him 0.5 points. Sabine grabs Ezra’s lightsaber and ignites it to fight off her attackers, scoring 0.5 points. Shin Hati also ignites her lightsaber, scoring 0.5 points. Ahsoka arrives in her ship to help Sabine and scores 4 points for speaking the final line of dialogue in the episode: “Bring us in.” Sabine collapses after taking Shin’s lightsaber to the abdomen, Qui-Gon Jinn-style, and scores 4 points for being the final character onscreen.
All characters who did not appear in the episode were penalized -0.5 points.
